Carl Barat: The Comeback

There’s no doubt Carl Barat has been though some tough times over the years, however it seems now he’s finally sorting things out. What with his successful reunion over the summer with The Libertines, A new solo album and his memoirs coming out, it seems 2010 could just be his year…

Yes Carl is firmly back on top. Not only is his musical career going well. But also his personal life- he has a baby on the way with girlfriend Edie Langley.

This personal happiness seems to be affecting his music- with early reviews of his album describing it as a ‘cuddlier’ and ‘happier’ version of The Libertines. However, things were not always so good for Carl; he spoke to The Guardian about his past paranoia saying:

"I took on too much of what crazy kids on the street thought of me. I felt depressed for so long, my life became this fug of other people's opinions. It came to the point where I'd spent a year in a room with the curtains shut 'partying' [drugs]. Then I found a bit of light and love [with Edie] and every- thing had to change. In order for that to happen, I needed catharsis and whatnot."

He also described how he tried to make his autobiography, ‘Threepenny Memoir’ a good read saying:

"I kept trying to write the perfect paragraph, but that was like reading Tennyson when you're 12. It makes sense, but really there are just far too many big words."

Groupies, drugs and alcohol-fueled antics also feature in the book, but he admits the hardest thing to write about with his relationship with Pete [Doherty], confessing:

"His reputation precedes him, and I wanted to write without slinging mud. Obviously things he did really hurt me and if I felt bitter about something it was hard to write objectively. I'm very scared that he's going to misread it."

It matters to him even more now what Pete thinks, considering their hugely successful reunion over the summer at Reading Festival. Talking about the reunion, he said:

"When we got together it was as if not a day had passed. We've both been nervous about seeing each other, though we wouldn't admit it. You know how when someone dies, part of the mourning is mourning the version of you that only they know? Well, that version of myself with Pete was rekindled. I've realised that unconditional love has to be unconditional. So I told Pete on the first day of rehearsal, 'I love you for who you are.' That meant a lot to him."

Carl’s debut album is out on October 4th.

New Music Review: Gucci Mane feat. Nicki Minaj & Pharrell- 'Haterade'

With ‘Haterade’ as a title, you’re probably expecting a hard rap song full of ‘fuck-you's’ and people singing about their 'beefs’, however Radric Davis a.k.a. Gucci Mane takes a departure from his usual aggressive style in favour of a more chilled vibe with new track ‘Haterade’.

He’s enlisted the skills of heavyweights Pharrell and Nicki Minaj to make this probably his best track to date.

Pharrell, as usual, brings the cool- giving the track a lazy laidback vibe whilst Minaj is as nonchalant as this girl is ever gonna get. The smooth baseline and slow pace makes this tune perfect for a 5-minute chill sesh.

New Music Review: 50 Cent- 'They Burn Me.'

Poor Mr Fiddy has no friends and decides to tell us about in new track ‘They Burn Me’.

Basically, he decided to slag all of his rap pals off in 2009’s ‘How To Rob’ and they retaliated- hard. Now he’s decided to get all emotional up on us with lyrics like “Look at what they did to me- they burn me, they turn me.’ (Sob).

The track actually is quite easy to listen to (unlike fiddy’s tweets) with a smooth baseline and that little chipmunk voice rappers seem to LOVE to use. Just cheer up Mr Cent yeh?!

New Music Review: Tensnake- "Comacat"

Dance fans listen up… because you’re about to have a new favourite tune!

Hamburg producer Marco Niemerski a.k.a. Tensnake releases some seriously funky beats with his new track “Comacat”.

If you’re looking for something to put a smile on your face, then this hedonistic track fits the brief perfectly. A delicious mix of diva moans, bells, clicks and congas concoct a sound so retro- you’d swear you were in an open-top Ibiza bar circa 1986.

The catchy baseline and well-placed piano riffs make this one of the best dance tunes of the year.

The track is available to dowload now.

New Music Review: Marnie Stern- "Transparency is the new mystery"

Marnie Stern’s second single off her new album ‘Kill Rock Stars’ shows a softer, more sensitive side to the usual hard-rock New Yorker.

Her stunning guitar skills are still on show, yet she shows true soul-baring emotion in her lyrics. I challenge anyone not to be filled with compassion for the girl as she repeatedly cries “I’m not enough… I’m not enough”.

However don’t be fooled by all this emotion- the song still packs a punch- crescendo-ing into a dramatic, yet eerily unresolved ending.

Zach Hill complements her perfectly on drums with his passionate beats that help to capture the essence of this heart-wrenching tune.

My picks for the MOBO awards...

In the past, the MOBO awards haven't always been one of the bigger events on the calendar.

However, with the recent surge in popularity in UK urban artists, people are definitely taking notice this year...

It will be a good night for Tinie Tempah who leads the way with four nominations- which he should win a couple of. In fact, it's a good year for the boys in general- with male artists dominating the awards.

In fact I'm a bit disappointed that only two females feature in the 'Best UK Act' category- and even them two (Leona and Alexandre Burke) came from a talent show!

I definitely think the girls need to make a big comeback at next years awards!

Anyway, below I've listed the categories and who I think should win them (highlighted).

Have your say here at the MOBO website where you can actually vote for who you want to win!

Introducing... Mona

Okay so I've been checking out new bands before my stint of work experience at NME.com (I know!) and whilst looking through their '50 Best New Bands of 2010' article, I found Mona...

They are four guys from Nashville who say their biggest influences are Elvis, Johnny Cash and Whiskey- can't get any more country than that!

Anyway, I listened to their song 'Listen To Your Love' and did actually fall in love whilst I listened (see what did there). It's very cool and rocky and sounds a bit like the mighty Kings Of Leon.

Anyway, check out there immense vid for the track below...

Love Sam xx
